Selections from the Japanese kir-i painting collection of Phyllis Rodin
These are works done in Hiroshima's aftermath by surviving young women of the Hiroshima Commercial High School.
Kiri, in Japanese, means 'to cut' and refers to the snipping of cloth,
the pieces then separated by color to be then used as a palette to be applied with rice glue.
This collection is on view at the C.X. Silver Gallery, 814 Western Avenue, West Brattleboro, Vermont through March 2008.
The collection is available for exhibition and other venues continue to be actively sought.
Contact Adam Silver for further information, (802) 257-7898, ext. 1.

These kiri images emulate the Ukiyo-e 'pictures of the floating world', a genre of Japanese woodblock prints and paintings from the 1620s to the mid 19th Century, including printmaker and painter Kitagawa Utamaro (ca. 1753-1806).
This kiri painting refers to Omikoshi, a local autumn harvest festival:
Villagers take the shrine in which the kami (nature spirits) reside and parade it around for good luck to the beat of drums.

The top tier of the Doll Festival (Hinamatsuri) display shows the King and Queen
traditionally depicted in court costumes from the Heian period (794-1185, 800-1200 years ago)
